APPLICATIONS HAVE NOW CLOSED
*** Note: Applications for our 2018 Summer Internships have now closed. ***
ATASS Sports are currently taking applications for our 2018 Summer Internship programme, which will run throughout July and August 2018. We are particularly seeking undergraduates with excellent mathematical and/or programming skills who have an interest in applying these skills to model and forecast the results of sports events.
During the internship, you’ll work in small teams to tackle a variety of cutting-edge sports modelling projects, using the statistical programming language R, and deliver regular seminars to present your ideas and discoveries back to the ATASS research team. For one day a week throughout the summer, you’ll also have the opportunity to undertake an individual research project on a topic of your choosing.
No previous experience in R is necessary, as full training will be provided during the first week of the programme.
Previous intern projects have spanned a vast range of topics, including:
- optimal batting strategies in test cricket
- forecasting future success in tennis using youth data
- football prediction using neural networks
- the longevity of world records in athletics
- effective substitution strategies in NBA basketball
- classifying ice hockey players via topological data analysis
- quantifying the home advantage in baseball
Our 2017 interns also generated predictions for the sprint events in the IAAF World Championships, while our 2016 interns helped contribute to the company’s published predictions of the 2016 Olympics medal table, by developing predictive models for each of the Olympic fencing disciplines!
